Manavgat rafting comes with a practical bonus: Köprülü Canyon National Park is only about an hour’s drive from the town, so you get a full day on the Köprüçay river without a dawn start. This guide looks at the day from a Manavgat point of view – the drive, the river, the zipline add-on and what families should know – and helps you choose between the two tours.
An hour from Manavgat to the Köprüçay
Manavgat lies on its own river a few kilometres inland, with the beach hotels of Ilıca, Kızılağaç and Kızılot stretching east along the coast. Köprülü Canyon is north-west of the town, in the Taurus Mountains between Manavgat and Serik, and the rafting bases sit around the villages of Beşkonak and Bozyaka on the Köprüçay. By road that is roughly an hour.
In practice this means a pickup at 08:30 and a return to your hotel at about 17:00. The Manavgat Rafting Tour and Manavgat Zipline & Rafting run to the same timetable, and both include the transfer from Manavgat, Ilıca, Kızılağaç, Kızılot, Hacıobası and Çenger. The exact time for your hotel reaches you after booking.
How the day runs
- 08:30 – pickup. The minibus collects you and heads inland.
- Kit and briefing. At the base, usually around 10:30–11:00, everyone receives a life jacket, a helmet and a paddle, and the instructors go through the commands and what to do if someone ends up in the water.
- On the river. About 14 km of class II–III rapids and roughly 2–2.5 hours of paddling, including stops to swim and take photos. Each raft holds 8–12 people plus an instructor, who steers and calls the strokes.
- Lunch. A buffet at a restaurant on the riverbank – typically grilled chicken, salads, pasta, rice or bulgur and fruit. Lunch is included; drinks are paid separately.
- About 17:00 – back at your hotel. The return transfer leaves the canyon in the afternoon.
Because the transfer is short, more of the day belongs to the river than to the road, and you get back with the whole evening still ahead of you.
Rafting only, or zipline and rafting?
Both tours share the drive, the river and the lunch. The only difference is a short zipline at the rafting base:
- Manavgat Rafting Tour: the river day on its own. Choose it if the rapids are the main event, if someone dislikes heights or if you want to keep a first rafting day simple.
- Manavgat Zipline & Rafting: adds a ride on a line stretched over or along the Köprüçay. Its length depends on the base and is usually a few hundred metres. An instructor fits your harness and sees you off, and the ride takes place either before or after the rafting.
Think of the zipline as a short extra thrill rather than a second half-day: a few airy moments above the river you are about to paddle. It goes down particularly well with teenagers and groups of friends. Both activities start at 7 years, so the choice comes down to appetite rather than age. Our zipline guide compares these river lines with the canyon park at Göynük near Kemer.
Rafting with children from Manavgat
Children can raft from 7, and anyone under 18 takes part with a parent; there is a child ticket for ages 7–11. Swimming skills are not required, because the life jacket keeps everyone afloat, but children should be relaxed in water and happy to keep a helmet on. Every raft has an instructor, and class II–III rapids are suitable for first-timers.
- Ask the instructor where children should sit before the raft sets off.
- Shoes that stay on in the water matter more than anything else on the packing list; they can also be rented at the base.
- Children cool down quickly once they are wet, so pack a towel, a full change of clothes and a warm top for the drive home.
Is your youngest under 7? Then the river will have to wait, but the Manavgat Green Canyon Boat Tour makes a calm family day close to home. Green Canyon, the lake of the Oymapınar Dam, lies in Manavgat district only 30–45 minutes away. The boats stop for swims, lunch and soft drinks on board are included, and there are tickets for infants and children.
What to wear and pack
- A swimsuit under light, quick-drying clothes
- Water shoes or old trainers that fasten firmly – flip-flops slip off easily
- A towel and a complete set of dry clothes
- Water-resistant sunscreen and a cap for the breaks
- Cash for drinks and for the extras sold at the base: shoe rental, wetsuits, waterproof phone pouches, photos and video
Rings, watches and unstrapped sunglasses are safer left in your room.
Season, and seeing the canyon without a raft
The rafting season runs mainly from April to October; in November the river is run on some days only, depending on water and weather. Outside the hot summer months, a wetsuit rented at the base keeps you warmer.
Not everyone in your group wants to paddle? The Manavgat Jeep Safari heads into the same national park by jeep: it stops at the viewing terrace above the narrow Tazı Canyon, visits the Roman stone bridge Oluk Köprüsü and finishes with a swim in the Köprüçay and lunch by the water. The national park entry may be charged on site.
Nothing is paid up front: you book on the tour page or via WhatsApp, pay in cash on the tour day and can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.
